Saving Geraniums from Rain Damage

Geraniums, while hardy, can be susceptible to damage from excessive rain. Here’s how to identify and address common rain-related issues in your geranium plants:

Identifying Rain Damage

  • Root Rot: This is the most common issue caused by excessive rain. Look for yellowing leaves, wilting, and fallen flowers.
  • Fungal Diseases: Excessive moisture can create an ideal environment for fungal diseases like powdery mildew and gray mold. These can cause spots, discoloration, and stunted growth.
  • Parasites: Slugs and snails thrive in damp conditions and can damage geranium leaves and stems.

Prevention Tips

  • Choose well-draining soil: Plant geraniums in a pot with well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging.
  • Avoid overwatering: Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Provide shelter: During heavy rain, move potted geraniums to a sheltered location or cover them with a tarp.
  • Monitor for pests: Regularly check your plants for signs of pests and address any issues promptly.
