Dreaming of fresh, homegrown avocados? It’s possible to cultivate these delicious fruits right in your own home, even without a backyard. Here’s a guide to growing avocado trees indoors.
Choosing the Right Avocado
- Select a ripe avocado: Look for an avocado with a dark, almost black skin and a slight yield to gentle pressure.
- Save the pit: Once you’ve enjoyed the avocado, carefully remove the pit and wash it with warm water.
Preparing the Pit
- Insert toothpicks: Stick three toothpicks around the pit’s circumference, evenly spaced, about halfway down.
- Fill a glass: Fill a glass with water, making sure the bottom of the pit is submerged. The toothpicks should rest on the rim of the glass, holding the pit in place.
- Replace water regularly: Change the water every few days to prevent mold and keep the pit hydrated.
