Vegan Whole Wheat Bread

Yields: 1 loaf Prep time: 30 minutes Rise time: 1-2 hours Bake time: 30-35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the warm water and maple syrup. Pour this into the dry ingredients and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Shape and second rise: Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 190°F (88°C).
  7. Cool and enjoy: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
