Growing a Lemon Tree from Cuttings in Water: A Quick Guide

While it’s generally recommended to root cuttings in soil for optimal growth, it’s possible to propagate a lemon tree by soaking the cutting in water. This method can be quicker but requires more attention and care.

Choosing and Preparing the Cutting

  • Select a healthy branch: Choose a non-flowering, pencil-thick branch from a mature lemon tree. It should be about 6-8 inches long.
  • Make the cut: Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make a slanted cut just below a leaf node. Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.

Rooting the Cutting in Water

  • Prepare the water: Fill a clean glass or jar with filtered or distilled water. Make sure the water covers at least 2 inches of the cutting.
  • Place the cutting: Insert the cut end of the lemon cutting into the water.
  • Maintain conditions: Place the container in a warm, bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.
  • Change water: Change the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacterial growth.
