The Humble Common Mallow: More Than Just a Wayside Weed

Don’t underestimate the unassuming Common Mallow (Malva neglecta) – that leafy green you might find growing wild in your garden or park. This versatile plant boasts a rich history and surprising range of uses, making it a valuable addition to any garden or natural remedy cabinet.

A Weed by Any Other Name…

Common Mallow, also known as cheesesweed, roundleaf mallow, or dwarf mallow, is a herbaceous plant native to Europe and Asia. It’s easily recognizable by its round, lobed leaves and delicate pink flowers. While it may appear as a common weed, Mallow has earned its place in gardens and herbal lore for centuries.

A Culinary Delight:

The tender leaves and flowers of Common Mallow are surprisingly delicious! Young leaves can be enjoyed raw in salads, while older leaves benefit from brief cooking like spinach. The flowers can be used to make a sweet syrup or steeped in vinegar for a unique flavor.

A Soothing Soother:

Common Mallow has a long history of medicinal use. The leaves and flowers, steeped as a tea, can be used to soothe coughs, sore throats, and inflammation. A poultice made from crushed leaves can be applied externally to reduce the discomfort of insect bites, stings, and skin irritations.
